Antep Lahmacun, one of the most iconic flavors of Gaziantep’s rich culinary tradition, has been granted geographical indication status by the EU. With this registration, it joins the list of Turkish products recognized and protected at the international level. The designation confirms the unique characteristics of Antep Lahmacun, including its long-established production methods, region-specific ingredients, and distinctive flavor profile rooted in Gaziantep’s gastronomic heritage.

The thinly rolled dough, balanced spice blend, and the craftsmanship required in its preparation are among the fundamental elements that make this product unique.

What Does a Geographical Indication Mean?

A geographical indication is an official designation granted to products that are strongly associated with a specific region and possess unique qualities linked to that origin.

Holding such a designation ensures:

  • a clear association with a particular region,
  • the protection of traditional production techniques,
  • the prevention of imitations,
  • increased recognition on the international stage.

With the EU’s registration, this protection is now valid across all EU member states.

A Significant Step for Gaziantep’s Culinary Heritage

The EU recognition of Antep Lahmacun marks an important milestone, highlighting the global appreciation for Gaziantep’s deep-rooted culinary culture. This achievement reflects the long-term dedication of local producers, artisans, and institutions.

The contributions of the Gaziantep Commodity Exchange played a particularly notable role in the registration process. The international protection of Antep Lahmacun not only strengthens the visibility of Gaziantep but also enhances the global presence of Turkish gastronomy.
