What Does a Geographical Indication Mean?
A geographical indication is an official designation granted to products that are strongly associated with a specific region and possess unique qualities linked to that origin.
Holding such a designation ensures:
- a clear association with a particular region,
- the protection of traditional production techniques,
- the prevention of imitations,
- increased recognition on the international stage.
With the EU’s registration, this protection is now valid across all EU member states.
A Significant Step for Gaziantep’s Culinary Heritage
The EU recognition of Antep Lahmacun marks an important milestone, highlighting the global appreciation for Gaziantep’s deep-rooted culinary culture. This achievement reflects the long-term dedication of local producers, artisans, and institutions.
The contributions of the Gaziantep Commodity Exchange played a particularly notable role in the registration process. The international protection of Antep Lahmacun not only strengthens the visibility of Gaziantep but also enhances the global presence of Turkish gastronomy.
