Against the Current: How Turkey Defies Europe’s Investment Crisis

Europe is sliding into a tangible crisis of confidence among international major investors. While the continent wrestles with geopolitical uncertainties, bureaucratic overregulation, and stagnant growth, the latest data from the EY European Attractiveness Survey 2026 reveals a dramatic trend reversal: foreign direct investment (FDI) is plummeting across Europe—yet one region is resisting this pull with remarkable determination.

The latest EY report speaks volumes. In 2025, the total number of announced FDI projects across Europe dropped by a significant seven percent. Even established economic powerhouses like Italy suffered painful setbacks, registering an eight percent decline. With a total of just over 5,000 projects continent-wide, it becomes abundantly clear: global capital has become extremely selective in the current market environment. As an angel investor and growth advisor, I observe this shift in practice every single day: investors are no longer chasing short-term returns; they are looking for structural resilience, high adaptability, and future-proof conditions.

The Anatomy of a Counter-Cyclical Success

Amid this pan-European downward trend, Turkey’s performance stands out as a genuine outperformer. Securing a robust 20 percent year-on-year growth and a total of 383 newly announced FDI projects, the country solidifies its position among Europe’s leading investment destinations. This momentum is no accident; it is the direct result of a calculated positioning at the critical intersections of global supply chains.

Operating as the “Nexus of the World,” the country benefits massively from the global waves of nearshoring and friendshoring. International corporations have learned that long, fragile supply chains represent an unacceptable risk. Turkey’s geographic proximity to core European markets, combined with a highly modern logistics infrastructure, offers the ideal solution to this vulnerability. From a global scaling advisory perspective, it is evident: anyone looking to penetrate international markets today seeks exactly these types of strategic bridgeheads.

Beyond Geography: Talent, Tech, and Value Creation

Yet, geography alone is no longer enough to attract billions in investment in 2026. The real driver behind investor confidence lies in solid economic fundamentals and a deep pool of skilled professionals. While Western Europe struggles with an aging demographic and acute labor shortages, Turkey possesses a young, tech-savvy, and flexible workforce.

This shift is particularly evident in high-value-added sectors. Whether in the rapidly expanding technology ecosystem, forward-thinking startups, or sustainable production initiatives (such as the textile and denim industries, which are increasingly reinventing themselves as drivers of circular value creation)—the country is transitioning from a traditional production line into a strategic innovation hub. For venture capital, this ecosystem offers excellent entry points, where genuine technological transformation aligns with industrial scalability.

Conclusion: A Wake-Up Call for the European Core

Turkey’s counter-cyclical growth demonstrates impressively that capital flows to where agility is nurtured and strategic opportunities are boldly seized. For Europe’s core economies, this finding should serve as a stark wake-up call: rigidity and hesitation drive investors away. For founders, scale-ups, and international investor networks, however, the numbers validate a reality we have long observed in practice: those seeking true global growth and resilient structures can no longer bypass the new bridge-builders of the global economy.
